The McLaren driver narrowly beat team-mate and championship contender the Australian for the fastest time in the dying seconds of practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who seized the title advantage from Piastri by a single point after winning in Mexico City two weeks ago, beat the Australian by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Earlier in the session, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair throughout the hour before the sprint shootout set to begin at the evening session. Max Verstappen, the only other driver in the championship fight, lying 36 points behind Norris, finished in P17 as his team opted for a unique setup. Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to go off, if briefly, when he rotated at corner four soon after starting. The Japanese lost control over the track edges before rotating through the run-off area, and was fortunate to escape with just a light touch of the barrier. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also spun, at the final moments of the session, rotating twice through the high-speed Mergulho turn approaching the last turn on to the start-finish straight. Hamilton ended the session in 19th place, one place behind team-mate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren drivers were far ahead of the remaining drivers, with Nico Hulkenberg's car P3, over half a second off Piastri's pace. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was in fourth, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto in front of the Mercedes of George Russell and the Alpine of Pierre Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
