British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages down to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
