Elon Musk's Artificial Intelligence Chatbot Modifies Images of Women to Virtually Remove Their Clothes

Artificial Intelligence Image Manipulation Issue

The online network X has sparked major outrage after people used its artificial intelligence assistant Grok to change images of females by stripping their attire.

Several cases have surfaced where the system has been employed to digitally undress female subjects to make them appear in swimwear without consent, as well as to insert them in sexually explicit scenarios.

Developer Reaction and Regulatory Stance

XAI, the company behind Grok, offered no comment to requests for comment, aside from an standard message stating "traditional news outlets lies".

A Home Office representative stated that legislation is being introduced to prohibit image stripping technology. Under a proposed criminal offence, anyone who provided such tools would "receive a prison sentence and significant fines".

"The platform has the ability to stop these forms of abuse if they desired to," said Clare McGlynn, adding they "appear to enjoy impunity."

Regulator Stance and Tool Capabilities

The regulator Ofcom said platforms must "assess the potential" of people accessing illegal content on their services, but did not confirm whether it was at this time examining X or Grok in concerning artificial intelligence pictures.

Grok is a free AI assistant—with some additional functions—which responds to X users' queries when they tag it in a message.

It is frequently used to offer reactions or additional background to other users' comments, but people on X are also capable of modify an posted picture through its AI image editing tool.

History of Criticism and Policy

The chatbot has been faulted for enabling users to produce photos and clips with nudity and sexually suggestive content, and it was earlier accused of creating graphic material of public figures.

"X has been enabling the generation and spread of these images for a long time without taking any measures and we have yet to see any challenge by oversight bodies," the expert added.

XAI's own usage rules bans "showing images of individuals in a graphic way".

In a comment, Ofcom said it was unlawful to "generate or circulate deepfakes or child sexual abuse material" and confirmed this covered sexual deepfakes created with AI.

It said networks such as X were mandated to take "appropriate steps" to "reduce the risk" of users viewing illegal content on their services and to remove it promptly when they are notified of it.
